It means using a combination of gentler alternatives to sulfates for thorough but damage-free cleansing. Sulfates are powerful detergents found in most shampoos. They effectively remove oily sebum and buildup such as from silicones. Unfortunately, sulfates also damage hair over time and strip the cuticle of its water-proof coating.
This will lift and roughen the “shingles” of the cuticle and lead to dullness and frizz. This also makes the typically water-proof hair strands both take on and lose water which stretch and shrink further damaging hair.
