What actually matters in a scalp serum
Hair thinning has several causes at once, which is why single-ingredient serums tend to disappoint. Five mechanisms show up repeatedly in the research, and most products on this list address one or two of them.
Hold those five in mind and the pattern across this list is clear. Kérastase is a breakage product. OUAI and Act+Acre lead with scalp comfort and hydration. Divi leads with circulation and barrier. The Ordinary is a pure peptide play. Full Follicle is the only formula on the list that puts an ingredient against all five.
The peptide three of them share
Three serums on this list contain the same anti-DHT pairing: acetyl tetrapeptide-3 with red clover flower extract, the combination sold to formulators as Capixyl. It appears in Maelove Full Follicle at $49.95, in OUAI Scalp Serum at $54.00, and in The Ordinary Multi-Peptide Serum for Hair Density at $24.00 for double the volume.
That pairing has the most encouraging data of any non-drug active in this category. In published work, the combination produced results comparable to 3% minoxidil at 24 weeks, with a 15% increase in anagen (growing) hairs and a 52% reduction in telogen (resting) hairs.
If your only goal is to get that peptide complex onto your scalp for the least money, The Ordinary does it for $24 and we would rather tell you than have you find out later. What $24 does not buy you is anything aimed at the other four mechanisms.
The peptide base is becoming a commodity. What separates these products now is what gets built on top of it.
What each serum is built for
Most of these products are not really competing with each other. They are solving adjacent problems and using similar language to do it.
Only one of the eight has growth factors
Six of these eight serums contain at least one peptide, so peptides no longer separate anything. Growth factors do. One of the eight has them.
Growth factors are signaling proteins that tell cells what to do. In hair, the relevant ones are involved in pushing follicles from the resting phase into the growing phase and in supporting the blood supply that feeds them. Full Follicle contains five: EGF, aFGF, bFGF, IGF-1, and VEGF.
An anti-DHT peptide slows the process making things worse, but does little for follicles that have already gone quiet. Those are two different jobs. The Swiss apple stem cell extract in the same formula reduced shedding by 34% at one month and 41% at two months in ingredient-level studies, which is the part most people notice first.
None of the actives in Full Follicle are FDA-approved drugs. Minoxidil and finasteride are, and they are held to a different evidentiary standard. When we say the acetyl tetrapeptide-3 and red clover pairing performed comparably to 3% minoxidil at 24 weeks, that is one specific finding at one concentration and one timepoint. It is not a claim that this serum replaces minoxidil. Many people use both, since they work through different mechanisms.
What the evidence does and does not show
Almost every consumer claim in this category, including ours, comes from small self-assessed studies rather than instrumented hair counts.
Our own clinical was a 120-day independent third-party study of 32 women aged 35 to 60. By 60 days, 100% reported increased hair thickness, 100% reported increased hair growth, 87.5% reported fuller hair, and 87.5% reported less shedding. More than half saw results by 30 days.
Those are real numbers from a real study, and they are also participant-reported outcomes from 32 people. That is a perception study, not a phototrichogram counting follicles per square centimeter. We would rather say so than let you assume otherwise. Judge us, and everyone else on this list, on formulation and mechanism first, and treat the percentages as supporting evidence rather than proof.
Ask three questions. How many people were in the study? Were results measured or self-reported? And was it the finished product that was tested, or a single ingredient at a concentration the product may not match? Most claims in hair care fall apart on the third question.
All eight, side by side
Here is everything above in one grid. Every price and size was checked on the brand's own product page (or a major retailer where the brand does not sell direct) in August 2026. Prices are list price, before subscription discounts. Several of these brands discount 10% to 30% for subscribers, so check the current page before you buy.

Bottle sizes differ enough that list price alone misleads. Per ounce the spread runs from $12 for The Ordinary to $64 for Vegamour, with Full Follicle at $49.95. Read that with care, though, since per-ounce math rewards big dilute bottles and penalizes concentrated ones. Where brands publish a supply duration, Vegamour, Maelove, and Nutrafol all state roughly one month per 1 fl oz bottle, and Act+Acre states two months for 2.2 fl oz.
The most expensive serum here costs 3.6 times the cheapest, and the cheapest one contains five named peptide complexes. Price and formula are close to unrelated in this category.
Which one should you pick
Whatever you pick, give it 90 days minimum. Hair growth cycles are measured in months, and every product on this list quotes a window of 60 to 112 days. Four weeks is not long enough to judge any of them.
FAQ
What is the best hair growth serum in 2026?
There is no single best one, because these products solve different problems. For the widest mechanism coverage, Maelove Full Follicle is the only serum in this comparison targeting all five causes of thinning and the only one with growth factors. For value, The Ordinary at $24 for 2 fl oz is unmatched. For breakage rather than thinning, Kérastase Genesis. Match the product to your actual complaint.
Is Vegamour GRO worth $64?
It is the most expensive serum in this comparison per ounce at $64, against a category that starts at $12. The formula is built on plant-expressed peptides and turmeric callus culture, and it does not contain growth factors. If you want it, the subscription price of $49 is a meaningfully better deal than the $64 one-time price.
What is a good Vegamour alternative?
Depends what you liked about it. For a similar price with broader mechanism coverage, Maelove Full Follicle at $49.95. For the same peptide category at a third of the cost, The Ordinary at $24 for 2 fl oz. For scalp comfort over density, OUAI at $54. We would avoid framing any of these as a dupe, since the formulas are genuinely different rather than copies of one another.
Do growth factors actually work for hair?
Growth factors are signaling proteins involved in moving follicles from the resting phase into the growing phase and in supporting blood supply to the follicle. The research is promising rather than settled, and topical delivery is an active question in the literature. What is factual is that only one serum in this comparison contains them, so it is not an ingredient you can shop for casually.
How long before a scalp serum works?
Expect reduced shedding first, usually somewhere between four and eight weeks, then visible density later at three to six months. Brands in this comparison quote windows from 60 to 112 days. Results vary, and consistency matters more than which of these you choose.
Can I use a scalp serum with minoxidil?
Generally yes, since none of the serums here work through the same pathway as minoxidil. Talk to your dermatologist if you are treating diagnosed hair loss, and introduce one product at a time so you can tell what is helping.
Are these prices current?
